Despite this book's whimsical title, it is an important addition to the volumes I have written.
This is a 60 pages story of a wonderful companion who was our family "glue" and staple for almost 17 years. The primary focus of the book, apart from Mia's personal story in a family context, is the spiritual lessons that cats can teach humans (and by association other creatures can do the same). Such spiritual lessons include humility, playfulness and silence.
The book also includes a brief history of where cats came from, and attempts to answer that perennial question of many pet owners, will I see my cat or other companion in heaven? What exactly do Catholic and Christian theologians believe about the final end and 'eternal life' of God's creatures? These creatures are so important. We and the earth would not survive without them. The book is priced at $20 AUS plus P & P. Please send enquiries to email@example.com
Why this book? At first glance, this might seem to be a strange title for a book. Why bother with the historical and spiritual legacy of a house pet and with a cat in particular?
My answer is this. I wrote Mia the Wonder Cat – Spiritual Lessons that Cats can Teach Us as a response to the death of my beautiful cat on 13 December 2022. Mia was not just a pet as one considers a detached number or some bothersome creature. She was my friend and constant companion. – an endless source of wonder, curiosity and grace. In diverse ways, she played the same role for my children and for my wife. But she was much more than this. She occupied a ‘large physical and spiritual space’ in our house. She had a distinct personality. And, even though she was restricted to her cat language of meowing, purring, rubbing, and at times hissing and caterwauling, she nevertheless communicated in more profound ways. She was constantly trying to communicate and socialise – to belong. She was the creaturely ‘glue’ that held our family together.
She lived in our house (in myriad favourite places) as my friend, critic, demanding family member, constant feeder, and perennial sleeper. I have a strong belief that cats possess or ‘teach’ a form of spirituality that they impart to those who choose to observe and ‘listen’ to them. Among other virtues, cats can teach us the abiding value of Sabbath, solitude, listening, humility, ‘doing nothing’, and fidelity. I also argue, as do the Egyptians and other cultures, that cats have a spiritual presence that will greet us on the other side. Humans are not the only ones who will enjoy a spiritual life after their deaths. I believe that we will be united with our cherished cats (and other pets) in heaven to once again resume our long-lost friendship and enjoy their unique, loving, and quixotic feline company.
