Dr. Peter Mudge (BADipEd, DTheol, Honorary Research Associate, Sydney College of Divinity) is a baby boomer born in 1958 and has been teaching and writing in the fields of religious education, spiritual formation, and their links with the arts for over 42 years. His classroom teacher training commenced in De La Salle Brothers’ schools and was formalised at Macquarie University.
He has taught many online tertiary courses on religious education and spirituality between 2011 and 2020 in various institutions, including Australian Catholic University. His academic writing began with an article on ‘Family Rituals and Sacred Space’ (ACR) in 1994. Since then, he has written over 50 academic articles, co-authored a combined 15 books and book chapters, and presented on many occasions at workshops and conferences, including several keynote presentations.
Peter has devoted most of his research, academic, and teaching career to the twin areas of religion, education, and spirituality. These areas have punctuated his BADipEd, BTheol, MTheol, and DTheol studies. Moreover, he completed major studies in spirituality in each of his theology degrees. His MTheol focused on spiritual formation (Adrian van Kaam, Institute of Spiritual Formation, Pittsburgh). At the same time, his DTheol research topic was connected to knowing and sacred space (Belenky et al., and other researchers).
Peter is the proud father of Christopher James (d.2020) and Nicola Levana Mudge (d. 2006). He has been married to Gwendoline Wijenberg for over 35 years.
During his career, Peter has taught in Catholic schools, as part of a retreat team, and worked in four Catholic education offices in two States, including two country dioceses. He then worked for seven years as a Senior Lecturer in Religious Education and Spirituality.
Over the last five years, he has worked as a consultant and online lecturer and as a ‘critical friend’ for spiritual formation and religious education senior leaders. He has also been preparing a series of ZOOM presentations on selected chapters from his books Living Spirituality, Series 1, 2, and 3. More recently, he has been preparing with his wife their latest Eternal Life Letters to Our Two Children volume, which details the lives and death from a brain tumour of his two children.
During 2022 he wrote a paper on the future of Spiritual Formation for the Sisters of St Joseph and their facilities. Over the past few years and into the future (c.2025) he is committed to being involved with leaders and teachers in embedding the Catholic Liberal Arts in the Sydney Catholic Schools RE curriculum across Years 7-10 and Years 5-6. He is also involved in exploring Spiritual Formation with the National Leadership Team of Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA).
He is also involved in writing poetry and his immediate family history (1958 to the present). His hobbies include reading spiritual classics and non-fiction, creating art in his home studio, post-COVID-19 travelling, and enjoying the company of family and friends.
More information on his books and publications can be found on this website.
